Eligibility for a Cochlear Implant
If you have moderate to profound hearing loss and hearing aids are no longer helping, a cochlear implant could be an effective option for you.
The Nucleus® System can help many people with hearing loss, from infants to adults. To find out if a Nucleus cochlear implant is a solution for you, it’s important to know the cause of your hearing loss.
Inner ear problems
Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when parts in the inner ear (cochlea and hair cells) don’t work properly. With sensorineural hearing loss, sounds are not only softer, but may seem muffled or garbled, and harder to separate from another one. As a result, this type of hearing loss can make it difficult to interpret the meaning of speech and sounds. Hearing aids may help, but sometimes not enough.

Does this describe you or your child?
If you have moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss, you may find it hard to understand what people are saying on the phone or in noisy situations, even with the most powerful hearing aids. You could be increasingly dependent on lip-reading in conversations or having more trouble keeping pace at work.
Alternatively, your child may be impacted by sensorineural hearing loss. They may fail to react to loud sounds, avoid playing with other children or be falling behind with their speech and language developmental milestones. This could be the case even when they’re wearing hearing aids.
In either case, a health professional can talk you through the options and help you make the most informed decision. If you don’t already have someone to speak to, we can help you find a clinic close to you. When considering what to do, the most important thing is to have all the information.
The benefits of a cochlear implant
Studies have shown that adults with cochlear implants understand sentences on average almost seven times better than they could with hearing aids. Then there are the other improvements. In a US survey of 900 cochlear implant users, most respondents said they could effectively communicate over the phone and enjoy listening to music with their cochlear implant1. With all these benefits, why wait? Nearly 80% of people who received a cochlear implant within a year of finding out they were candidates said they would get a cochlear implant sooner if they could do it again1.
