Understanding conductive hearing loss

Conductive hearing loss occurs when damage or blockage to the outer ear or middle ear blocks sound vibrations from reaching your inner ear. People who have conductive hearing loss may feel like their ears are plugged and speech may sound muffled. With this type of hearing loss, you will most likely understand speech, but only if it's loud enough and if there is little to no background noise.

Some of the most common causes of conductive hearing loss include:

Microtia and Atresia
Previous ear surgeries
Chronic mastoiditis or middle ear infections
Skin growth or cyst (cholesteatoma)
Syndromes such as Down, Goldenhar and Treacher Collins
Draining ears
Chronic ear infections

Understanding mixed hearing loss

Mixed hearing loss refers to a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. This means there may be damage in both the outer or middle ear and in the inner ear. People who suffer from mixed hearing loss describe sounds as being both softer and more difficult to understand.

Any of the causes of conductive hearing loss plus any of the following can lead to mixed hearing loss:

Head trauma
Genetics
Otosclerosis
Ménière's disease

How bone conduction solutions are different from:

Conventional hearing aids

A bone conduction implant system is an implantable hearing solution designed to use your body's natural ability to conduct sound through bone conduction.
Hearing aids amplify the sounds you hear by pushing them through the damaged part of the ear.
A bone conduction solution bypasses the outer and middle ear and sends clearer, more crisp sound directly to your inner ear.¹

Middle ear surgery
