A Baha® implant helped Jesus overcome the severe conductive hearing loss he’d suffered since childhood.
A string of early childhood ear infections had left Jesus with severe conductive hearing loss. He said he’d endured pain, failed operations, social isolation and academic and professional limitations ever since.
“When I was one year old I began to have infections (otitis media) in my right ear. The infection soon passed to my other ear and I eventually developed a cholesteatoma. I had several operations and was left with a severe deafness that drastically affected my life during adolescence,” he said.
Jesus said he become isolated in school and from his family and friends, confining himself to solitary activities such as reading and computers. He said eventually his hearing impairment forced him to drop out of university. Conventional hearing aids didn’t help, but later Jesus found limited success with hearing spectacles, which he wore from the age of 21 to 36. While the spectacles made it possible for Jesus to get a job, he said they had their own problems.
“The sound quality was quite bad and the apparatus whistled a lot - but it was the only thing that allowed me to be able to communicate with people again. But the pressure from the glasses left me very sore and at times in a lot of pain and I was unable to work. I was ashamed when trying to converse with my colleagues and friends, so I threw in the towel and returned to the isolation of my youth.”
Jesus was about to resign from his job when a doctor eplained how the Baha® bone conduction system could benefit him. A Baha device would bypass Jesus’ conductive roadblock, rerouting sound directly to his cochlea. Because the Baha System doesn’t obstruct the ear canal, it would also allow the discharges from Jesus’ otitis media to dry properly. This would reduce the risk of further infections and all the associated problems that Jesus experienced as a child.
“I didn`t think! I didn’t feel that I had anything to lose,” Jesus exclaimed.
“The change in my life can be summarised in a single word: spectacular! When I first wore the device I cried. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! For the first time I realised that there was music playing in the clinic! Even using the lowest volume setting, the quality of hearing was far greater than I could have imagined.”
“It may sound trite but it is true to say that my life has radically changed. Now I am in my first year of an English course, one of the many things that I had always wanted to do. I have gained a trust in my relationships with others and I no longer try to escape from social activities. I attend the cinema, theatre and conferences and am so happy!”
“I encourage everyone who has the possibility to try the Baha System. Do not hesitate to do it if you need it. It’s definitely worth it! The joy of life is there.”
