Cochlear Implant Listening Skills Development
Auditory performance with a cochlear implant is described using four broad categories of auditory skill. In younger children, development of auditory skills occurs more naturally where all skills are targeted simultaneously. The following HOPE Note chart provides professionals with information on the hierarchy of auditory skill development essential for assessing current ability, targeting intervention goals and providing habilitation to children with cochlear implants.

Newly Implanted Preschooler
While children as young as 12 months of age can have a cochlear implant, some receive them at a later age. These children have a great opportunity to catch up to their hearing peers, especially if their habilitation program takes into account their auditory and language experiences prior to implantation. The following HOPE Note guide addresses considerations for designing a comprehensive intervention plan for newly implanted preschool aged children.
