Graeme Clark Scholarship in 2007
Kate Moss
Congratulations Kate!
Kate Moss, twenty year old RMIT University student from Australia is the Graeme Clark Scholarship winner for 2007.
“I was beyond thrilled when I was told that I had won the scholarship.” said Kate.
“There were several reasons that attracted me to the Graeme Clark Scholarship. Firstly, the financial assistance towards university studies was a huge incentive and secondly, winning a highly prestigious scholarship will look good on my CV and help me enormously in my future endeavours.”
Having completed her first year of a Bachelor of Arts degree specialising in International studies, Kate hopes to combine her field of study with her passion for travel and international affairs and one day work for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade before going on to work at embassies and consulates around the world.
Kate says “I know without a doubt that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t have the two cochlear implants and the support from my family, friends and teachers.”
Diagnosed with a profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss at the age of 12 months, Kate received her Cochlear Implant in 1998 saying:
“My life literally changed after the operation. For the first time, I heard sounds I had not heard before like the waves crashing, taps dripping, cicadas chirping and the sound of rain on the roof.”
In 2006 Kate received her second Implant and said:
“I chose to have bilateral cochlear implants for various reasons. I wanted to be able to improve my speech perception, communication, listening and localization skills. In addition, I also wanted to be able to access a greater spectrum of sounds. The second implant is a great success. I now feel that I can hear so much more with two implants than with one and wouldn’t change anything.”
“I truly believe that none of my activities and achievements would have been possible if it weren’t for the cochlear implants.”
