Baha’s 5 step process to clearer hearing
Cochlear Baha implants help thousands of adults and children live a full life. Baha may also be able to help you, or your child, experience a whole new world of sound.
Here is the five step process to getting a Cochlear Baha:
1. Assessing your hearing
A Baha-qualified ENT surgeon or audiologist carries out the necessary tests to determine if you, or your child, is a candidate for Baha. This is the time you should ask to trial Baha and experience the difference it can make to your life.
2. Receiving your implant
This is a relatively minor procedure. Under either local or general anaesthetic, your surgeon removes some hair follicles behind your ear and places a Baha titanium implant with an abutment.
Baha surgery is considered low risk. Unlike other types of ear surgery, there is no chance of further damage to your existing hearing. Most people get back to their normal day to day duties in just a few days.
3. Osseointegration
After the surgery, your implant needs time to fuse (osseointegrate) with the bone before your sound processor can be attached. Your surgeon will be able to give you an indication of how long this process may take.
4. Fitting your processor
Once your implant has formed a strong bond with the surrounding bone (a process know as 'osseointegration'), it's time to have the Baha sound processor fitted and switched on for the first time. You'll be able to hear sound straight-away!
At the same time, your hearing health professional will make adjustments to the Baha settings to suit your unique hearing needs.
5. Living with your Baha
Everyday living with a Baha is easy - just attach the sound processor and you're ready to go. A standard hearing aid battery powers the processor and typically lasts 1-2 weeks*. Regular, simple cleaning is needed and these instructions are provided in your aftercare material.
It's important to re-visit your hearing health professional so they can check the implant area and sound processor to make sure you're receiving the maximum benefits.
