Deaf Children Learn to Hear
The man who has helped bring hearing to hundreds of deaf children will visit Manila this week as part of a world tour.
First inspired to become a teacher of the deaf in the 1970’s by a friend’s daughter who was deafened by meningitis, Mr Warren Estabrooks is now a leader in the field of auditory habilitation of children with hearing impairment and travels the world to share his knowledge of auditory habilitation and learning.
Throughout his career Estabrooks has met hundreds of parents from countries across every continent who all share the same goal – to teach their child to be able to hear, listen and talk.
“There is no reason today, that a child born with a severe to profound hearing loss should remain deaf”, he said.
“Cochlear implants provided early enough, in combination with appropriate habilitation are proven to provide children with the ability to learn to listen and acquire language”.
Estabrooks believes that training, education and cultural understanding make a significant difference to a child’s hearing outcomes, and this ultimately helps people in their own environments to make positive changes.
The two day program for both parents and professionals is being run by the world leader in hearing biotechnology, Cochlear™, who pioneered the intervention twenty five years ago.
Today more than 120,000 deaf children and adults hear with Cochlear’s technology, 20 of which live in the Philippines.
Parents and professionals interested in attending the workshop entitled Hearing Habilitation: Auditory Verbal Therapy in Focus on the 9th and 10th November at The Peninsula Manila, Makati, Philippines, can book by contacting CLASP Auditory Verbal Centre clasp@ph.inter.net.
As a company committed not only to research and development but also to excellent outcomes for its recipients, Cochlear has enjoyed a successful partnership with Mr Estabrooks to ensure training and development of professionals in related educational and health care disciplines around the globe is second to none.
